Exploratory Classes ~


The Exploratory Division allows students from toddlers through adults to select classes that suit their interests. These 10-week courses offer opportunities to discover talents, explore interests and experience the arts.

There are endless opportunities to grow at the Hoffman Institute!

Important Exploratory Dates:

All Exploratory classes have been postponed a week and will commence beginning January 19.  Please call the registrar at 712-2706 if you have a question regarding the start date of a specific Exploratory class.  Preparatory classes will also commence as scheduled on January 19.

YOUTH CLASSES (AGES NEWBORN - 18 YEARS)

Kids Make Music 1 ~ Sing, Play and Learn CLOSED
Ages: 15 months–3 years, Wednesdays, 11:30 am–12:15 pm
Tuition per term: $90.00, materials fee: $27.77, including tax
Instructors: Rick and Debbie Christie
Participate with your toddler in a variety of activities.  Listening, singing, chanting, moving, dancing, and playing simple instruments are all used to enhance and further develop musical aptitude and listening abilities. One parent per child is required.

Kids Make Music 2 ~ Explore Musical Concepts and Instruments
Ages: 3–5, Wednesdays, 12:45–1:45 pm
Tuition per term: $120.00, materials fee: $33.50, including tax

This engaging class celebrates your child’s love of nature and growing independence through activities which focus on the seasons of the year.  Classes are designed to build attention span and self-expression and include singing, chanting, focused listening, music games, exploring musical instruments, creative movement and storytelling. It is suggested that Kids Make Music 1 be taken prior to this class. One parent per child is required.

Theater of Wonder
Ages: 3–5, Saturdays, 9:00–11:00 am
Tuition per term: $150.00,  materials fee: $29.96, including tax

Once upon a spring time …. Our young ones come together to create a magical garden where butterflies are born. The child’s imagination, sense of wonder, creative intelligence and self-expression are nourished through song and dance, paint and play, story and drama.  Children create their won picture books, wings and props, then dramatize The Fairy Garden for family and friends on the last day of class.

Once Upon A Rainbow CLOSED
Ages: 3–5, Tuesdays, 9:00–11:00 am
Tuition: $150.00
Materials fee: $29.96, including tax
Children in this arts immersion class experience each of the rainbow colors of nature – flowers, leaves, fruits, earth, sun, sky and sea. Through painting, singing, dancing and acting, children create a magical rainbow realm which they present to family and friends on the last day of class. Parents are invited to participate in some art activities.

Tiny Dancer: Ballet/Tap Combo
Ages: 4–6, Wednesdays, 5:15–6:15 pm
Tuition: $100.00
Instructor: TBA
Children are taught the fundamentals and language of dance in general and ballet and tap in particular in a fun, playful atmosphere of encouragement, discipline and warmth. Emphasis is on correct placement and developing a love of dance.

Disney Fun! CLOSED
Ages: 5–10, Thursdays, 5:15–6:45 pm
Tuition per term: $150.00, materials fee: $15.57, including tax
Instructors: Gina Sullivan, TBA
Each class, split into two age groups, allows students an opportunity to explore a new Disney theme, from flying on a magic carpet ride in Aladdin to swinging from the trees in Jungle Book. Students create theatrical art projects, sing songs, and play movement games to illustrate the Disney theme of the day. Participants work with an art specialist and a music specialist each week, and learn and grow while having Disney fun!

Broadway, Here I Come!
Ages: 10–13, Thursdays, 5:30–6:45 pm
Tuition per term: $135.00

This class reinforces musical theater performance techniques with a focus on the dramatic interpretation of character, vocal pitch, articulation and projection. By rehearsing and performing solos, duets and group numbers, students become more experienced and confident. They also learn about the history of musical theater, a truly American art form.

Dance for Musical Theater
Ages: 10–13, Thursdays, 6:45–8:00 pm

Explore the dance styles used in the world of musical theater: ballet, tap, hip-hop, modern and jazz. A little bit of everything for the student who wants a “leg up” on preparing for performing – or just likes variety!

Dramarama! CLOSED
Ages: 8–12, Tuesdays, 5:15–6:30 pm
Tuition per term: $125.00

Whether you are an old “ham” or just starting to explore life upon the stage, this class is full of fun. Classic comic characters become the basis for learning the fundamentals of breathing, relaxation and concentration as students develop their “actors’ bag of tricks”.

 

Comedy-Coaster! CLOSED
Ages: 8–12, Tuesdays, 6:30–7:45 pm
Tuition per term: $125.00

Beyond pratfalls and pantomime, this class will take you on a rollercoaster of classic physical comedic styles, all driven by the source of comedy, the funny characters themselves. Think dress-up with (imaginary) banana peels.

On Camera Acting
Ages: 11–13, Wednesdays, 5:15–6:45 pm
Ages: 14–18, Mondays, 5:15–6:45 pm

Ever thought about acting in films or on TV? Whether you’re new to acting or wish to take your theater training to a whole new level, our On Camera Acting class provides an opportunity to learn and develop new skills, hone the auditioning process, work with actual film and television scripts, and build your confidence and self-esteem. Anyone interested in professional work will receive ongoing information about non-union castings, agents, photographers, etc.

Improv Sketch Comedy CLOSED
Ages: 13–18, Tuesdays, 5:15–6:45 pm
Tuition per term: $135.00

Imagination and freedom are two of the young actor’s most valuable tools. Guided group exercises and theatrical games using the basic skills of improvisation teach students to explore their own creativity. This class also includes sketch and scene writing.

ADULT CLASSES

Adult Improvisation
Ages: 19 and up, Tuesdays, 7:00–9:00 pm
Tuition per term: $150.00

Relieve stress, have fun in a safe environment, and discover your own humor that is just waiting to be released through improv!

For the busy adult who needs flexibility, the Hoffman Institute offers a group lesson format that allows you to plan around your schedule.  Classes are limited in size and enrollment requires payment for four classes in advance.  However, students will not be charged for planned absences (24 hours notice required).  Enrollment and course
curriculum are ongoing throughout the semester.

Adult On Camera Acting
Ages: 18 and up, Mondays and/or Wednesdays, 7:00–9:00 pm 
Tuition: $24.00 per class, $96 to enroll
Instructor: Peggy Sheffield
Auditions, monologues, sides and scenes. Taught by
professional actor Peggy Sheffield, this class is for those already working in the TV/film industry as well as serious actors seeking a deeper connection to their roles and a higher level of work.  This intensive class is designed to take students to their next level, to improve existing skills, develop new skills and techniques, and to prepare participants to work as professionals.

Stage Acting for Adults I  (six classes) CLOSED
Ages: 19 and up, Mondays, 7:00–9:00 pm  January 11 – February 22
Tuition: $90.00

Join other aspiring thespians to learn the fundamentals of acting. Experienced actors will benefit from the class, too. Stretch those creative muscles, be the character you were born to play, and meet other actors.

Stage Acting for Adults II  (six classes)
Ages: 19 and up, Mondays, 7:00–9:00 pm  March 8 – April 12
Tuition: $90.00
Instructor: Mary Fitzpatrick
Build on what was begun in Stage Acting for Adults I. Learn what can make a good actor a great actor, and, when you decide that you’d like to perform on stage, you’ll have the skills to wow an audience!

Adult Tap
Ages: 19 and up, Tuesdays, 7:15–8:15 pm
Tuition: $12.00 per class, $48 to enroll
Instructor: Beth Caprio
For the aspiring hoofer, this class will have you doing a soft shoe to Tea for Two and shuffling off to Buffalo in no time. Come learn all styles of tap and razzle-dazzle your friends and family. Tap shoes required.

Come experience the joy of singing and forty years of tradition! The Clearwater Chorus, the official adult chorus of Ruth Eckerd Hall, performs a variety of styles from classical to pop and has appeared at the Hall each year since its opening. This season includes two exciting Main Stage concerts as well as other off-site community performances for the Clearwater Chorus.
